Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative (SPO)


By 2020, Indonesia intends to almost double its palm oil production to meet rising global demand.
The Sustainable Palm Oil (SPO) Initiative was established to support the shift to sustainability, addressing concerns that palm oil plantation expansion will increase deforestiation as well as socio-economic issues such as land tenure.
The Government of Indonesia in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and several large multinational companies has spearheaded SPO to address systemic barriers to sustainable palm oil production.

Palm oil and the derivatives are part of thousands of products across the globe today. Since 1990, palm oil consumption has quintupled worldwide. The demand in Asia, where palm oil is used in cooking oil, accounts for $44 billion industry. Indonesia is the world's largest producer of palm oil, with a forecasted annual growth in production of 10% Early 2013, exports from Indonesia hits five-year high.
