The role of zakat in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals

26 May 2017

Ending poverty and inequality are some of today’s greatest challenges that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to overcome. Giving by different religions plays an important contribution to financing those Goals. Zakat, as an obligatory payment for all Muslims earning above a certain threshold, is one of the world's largest forms of wealth transfer to the poor. It is also perhaps the most overlooked by development organisations despite its tremendous potential.
